July 2014: Prisons – Submit a Song

The United States imprisons more of it’s citizens as a percentage (2 million as of 2012) than any other country in the world. The prison population has grown exponentially since the declaration of the “war on drugs” around 1970. Also, the desire for monetary gain has led to the growth of the prison industry and the number of incarcerated individuals. We are looking for songs related to this topic which encompasses many aspects, including the prison industrial complex; immigrant detention; the war on drugs; prison labor; class control; race control; the new Jim Crow; political control (denial of voting rights); mandatory sentences; for profit prisons such as The Corrections Corporation of America (CCA); and on and on.
